England’s opening fixture of the 2006 World Cup was in Frankfurt, against Paraguay. The South Americans were in their third consecutive World Cup, so they weren’t going to be a pushover.

I arrived in Frankfurt, joining my brother Rob and school friends Spindle and Adie. I grabbed a taxi to our ridiculously orange hotel, where the others were waiting. It was so orange that we joked we’d need sunglasses just to check in. If we got lost, we’d simply follow the carroty glow back to our rooms.
