We’d been on the road for a week, now following the Netherlands, after Fabio Capello’s miserable England campaign ended abruptly, losing 2–0 to Germany, with Frank Lampard’s infamous disallowed goal.

There were four of us: Mat the dependable bruiser with a soft centre, Phil the calm, curious veggie with a data brain, young Steve from Durban had the local knowledge and his dad’s car, and I sorted the schedule… and the snacks. We were a misfit crew, filled with laughter and camaraderie.
