It looks like a huge night ahead at Wembley for both Ben White and James Garner, with both expected to start against Japan in what already feels like a defining moment before the squad is trimmed for the summer.

With Arsenal trio Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Bukayo Saka all sidelined through injury, Thomas Tuchel has his hands tied more than he would like for a final game on home soil. It could, however, play into the hands of those stepping in.

None have seized that opportunity better than White and Garner. Both have caught the eye in training, both drew praise from Tuchel in his pressers this week, and both know a big performance tonight will strengthen their chances of making the 26‑man World Cup squad.

Elsewhere, Tuchel’s selection already hints at where his thinking lies this summer. His team mixes experimentation with expectation.
