Gary Lineker has already outlined his plans for this summer’s World Cup: he will head to the United States to present a daily show built around his popular podcast The Rest Is Football. The series will be recorded daily in New York throughout the tournament.
It will be the first World Cup since 1994 at which he won’t appear as a presenter on the BBC’s coverage. Lineker will still be on screens – just not in the way we’ve been used to for more than two decades.
Few need reminding his connection to the World Cup runs deeper than broadcasting.
England’s talisman in Mexico ’86, winning the Golden Boot, and again in Italia ’90, where his goals and nerve from the penalty spot helped carry an England team to the semi finals for the first time on foreign soil.
