OSCAR WILDE once observed that fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.

Good old Ozzie could have been talking about the football replica kit industry - and as England unveiled their latest contribution to the Sports Direct catwalk in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay, we gained a sneak preview of the nightmare in acrylic coming to your local boozer soon.

At first glance, the return of a postbox-red away shirt was a major improvement on the prune-juice purple strip of 2024, which was a showcase for what happens when you open the curtains and see a football team getting dressed in the dark.

But at £134.99 for an adult ‘match’ shirt and an eye-watering £49.99 for a pair of navy shorts, you are probably entitled to expect more than a 1985 York City retro kit.
