How can a semi-final triumph beat the ultimate glory of 1966? Surely, the heroics of Moore, Charlton, Hurst and co can only be surpassed by a second star on the shirt? That just stands to reason, right?
Well, I can understand that point of view. But I disagree with it. For me, any victory against Argentina this evening, however it is achieved, will be our greatest ever, bar none.
That is in no way to disparage Alf Ramsey and his team. As I write, their triumph remains at the very pinnacle of English sporting success. I was born two years after that magical day, but like all England fans, I’ve read all the books and watched all the films and documentaries. What they did was magnificent and is still to this day a source of tremendous pride, undimmed by the six decades that have passed.
