Danny Welbeck should be on the plane, says Fabian Hurzeler

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler believes Danny Welbeck should be on the plane to the World Cup, praising not just his goals but his influence, experience and ability to connect a squad. With England’s final selection looming, Hurzeler makes the case for a forward whose value stretches far beyond the pitch.

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler feels Thomas Tuchel should take his in‑form striker Danny Welbeck to this summer’s World Cup.

Asked by Sky Sports whether Welbeck should go – and whether sitting out the recent England friendlies might even have helped his case – he was unequivocal.

“Yeah, definitely,” he told Sky. “I always try to repeat the same answer, and that would be nice to see him for the English national team. I think that he definitely deserves it.”

For Hurzeler, the argument extends far beyond goals. Welbeck’s goal record speaks for itself as the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League, but the Brighton head coach was keener to highlight his other qualities that will benefit England this summer.
