Squad Announcement: A great day for the Bellinghams, but not for Palmer

Joyous messages must be zinging their way between Madrid and Dortmund. What a day for the Bellingham family. We all knew that Jude would be just about the first name on the list, along with Harry Kane. But Jobe too? Wow. Tuchel has no doubts, however, declaring that Jobe is the “stand-out player” in the under-21 team.
As ever, it’s not who gets in, but who doesn’t, that writes most of the headlines. No Cole Palmer. No Phil Foden. Two years ago, both were vital cogs in the squad that went deep in Euro 2024. Foden started every match. Palmer scored in the final after coming on as a sub. And now? Tuchel clearly feels that Foden, whatever his enormous talents, just doesn’t fit in. As for Palmer, we can only assume he’s paying the price for a lack of commitment. “We stick with the guys who were in [the last] camp”, Tuchel said today. And it’s difficult to argue with that. The less talented Eze, meanwhile, gets in.
